Important achievements have been made during the past ten years, in the areas of rare earth surface engineering. A number of. rare earth elements have been successfully used to various types of coatings produced by using thermal spray and laser technologies. These works involved in some different metallic coatings, intermetallic compound coatings and ceramic coatings. It has been demonstrated that the addition of rare earth elements can alter the microstructure and mechanical properties of coating materials to produce an enhanced resistance to thermal shock, wear and corrosion degradation of the coatings. The present paper, as an extension of literature, reviews recent development in use of rare earth elements in thermal spray and laser surface modifications. The mechanisms of surface modifications related to the addition of rare earth elements were also discussed.
