Trace element and radiogenic isotope variations and abundances (REE, Nd-Sr, Ga) of clay deposits of the Carolina Slate belt are used to study the origin of the clays and processes leading to remobilization, transport, and concentration of toxic elements (including As and Se) during weathering. Clay rocks, silicastones, and iron oxide concretions comprise clay deposits that are hosted by extensive volcanic and volcaniclastic rocks and that represent high-alumina alteration zones.
