This paper presents a new high-speed protection technique for transmission lines, the 'adaptive trip and reclosure technique'. In the technique, the protective relay makes instant or delayed tripping decision based on the distance zone settings. The relay will trip instantly for a fault within its Zone 2 reach and reclose when the fault is cleared from the protected section. Similarly, it could do the same thing for a fault within its forward zone 3 reach but a zone 2 time delay must be employed in tripping operation. The paper presents extensive simulation studies with respect to different system and fault conditions. Results show that the technique is able to offer fast response without the need for communication link.
