A Total Energy Approach to Engineered Wood Products Plants, Part I Electrical Power Demand and Supply

Power for the operation of manufacturing facilities is increasing in cost, and classical sources of power have become unreliable in recent years. With the advent of brown outs and the loss of power due to storms becoming increasingly common, an alternate source of power is desirable. Facilities that make use of steam and other heat sources are an ideal location for the addition of generating equipment that includes heat recovery from exhaust gases. Power facilities can be designed to exceed the power requirements of the plant thus allowing the balance of power to be sold on the open power market. This paper will explore the power requirements for a typical wood products plant, the potential market for excess generated power, and the different types of cogeneration equipment and their direct application to the engineered wood products industry. Included in the equipment items that will be reviewed are combustion gas turbines, heat recovery steam generators, and steam turbines both condensing and back pressure. Additional material will be presented on the ancillary equipment required for a combined cycle plant including cooling towers, pumps, and inlet air conditioning for gas turbines. A final section will be presented on the typical investment costs and construction schedules to place these facilities into operation.
