The idea of Cryogenic Solid Propellants (CSP) is to freeze liquid or gaseous fuels and/or oxidizers. It combines the advantages of classical weight saving solid propellants of simple charge design with the energy content of modern liquid propellants. The characteristic burning behavior of modular CSP has been researched. With a higher number of small modules the combustion becomes more stable, the ignition is easier and the regression gets faster. After the ignition of the CSP a period of widely constant chamber pressure is achieved. It was found that the combustion of modular CSPs can be realized in a self-sustained mode, if the disc thickness of the modules is small enough. The burning of modular cryogenic solid propellants resulted in stable combustion behavior which is the basis of solid propellant combustion and opens a broad spectrum of applications in rocket propulsion encouraging further research and development.
