摘要

From October 1998 to May 1999, concurrent outbreaks of diseases of unknown etiology in pigs and humans occurred in Malaysia. A virus isolated from human case-patients was shown to be a novel paramyxovirus related to Hendra virus, subsequently named Nipah virus (NV). Of 216 labratory confirmed human cases and 79 (38%) deaths, all but eight (3%) cases were associated with pig farming.
