Production performance evaluation of Porcilis~(TM) Ileitis in a commercial finisher using u Lawsonia intracellularis seeder pig challenge model

Ileitis (Lawsonia intracellularis) is one of the most common enteric diseases of finishing pigs in the United States with estimated costs of more than $100 million annually.1 The costs incurred by ileitis are primarily a result of increased mortality,decreased average daily gain (ADG), reduced feed utilization, increased market weight variation, and increased medication costs. In order to help mitigate the impact of this disease, veterinarians and producers utilize commercially available vaccines like Porcilis~(TM) Ileitis and EnterisoP Ileitis in their swine operations. Porcilis Ileitis entered the US marketplace in late 2015 as the first inactivated Lawsonia intracellularis vaccine administered parenterally in swine. Initial licensing data and subsequent field applications have demonstrated the efficacy of Porcilis Ileitis in protecting pigs against ileitis.2 The objective of this study was to compare the production performance between pigs vaccinated with Porcilis Ileitis or Enterisol Ileitis,and non-vaccinated controls that were challenged with Lawsonia intracellularis using a seeder pig challenge model.
