DNA sequencing has been widely utilized by swine veterinarians and diagnosticians since the early 2000's to study the genetics and molecular epidemiology of swine viruses. The focus of these investigations mainly involved glycoprotein 5 (GP5) of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) and the hemagglutinin (HA) gene of influenza A virus (IAV). This testing has become commonplace and is offered by most veterinary diagnostic laboratories for $100-150 per sample.
