Bacterial genotyping is a useful tool to study the epidemiology of infections within and between herds. It can also be used to define the prevalent strains affecting swine herds, and to select representative isolates to be used in autogenous vaccines.Haemophilus parasuis control can be performed using commercial or autogenous vaccines. However, due to poor cross-protection between different serovars and strains, some herds experience better results using autogenous products. Selection of H. parasuisstrains to be used in autogenous vaccines can be performed based on strain characterization by means of Enterobacterial Repetitive Intergenic Consensus-based PCR (ERIC-PCR). Although the ERIC-PCR has high discriminatory power compared with other typingmethods, such as biochemical characterization or serotyping, its intra and interlaboratory reproducibility is poor. This is a major limitation for the construction of genotype databases, which can be used to compare H. parasuis isolates recovered at different time points.
