Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSv) surveillance for the purpose of monitoring herd status or virus elimination requires frequent sampling and testing. Program sampling protocols are based on blood testing, where obtaining theoptimum amount on a frequent basis represents a continuous challenge due to animal stress and welfare issues. In addition, extra costs are incurred for qualifying personnel to perform regular bleeding of a representative number of animals per pen and farm.
