Evaluation of the effects of tilraicosin (Pulmotil AC~R) administered in drinking water on nursery pigs inoculated with porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus

Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) constitutes one of the most important disease problems that the swine industry faces today. In 1990, Poison et al. estimated losses due to porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS)at US 236 dollar per sow due to infertility, abortions, stillbirths and neonatal mortality. More recently, Neuman et al. 2005 reported a total cost of 560 million dollar due to PRRS in growing pigs: 250 million dollar (45%) were due to declines in average daily gain and feed efficiency in growing pigs; 243 million dollar (43%) resulted from mortality in growing pigs; and the rest, 63 million dollar (12%) was attributed to reproductive losses. Since the study was conducted, feed costs have increased by50-65% as a result of market demand for corn by ethanol manufacturers (Funderburke et al., 2007) therefore PRRS actual economical impact is much higher. Consequently any effort directed towards the control of PRRS will have an important impact on production cost and therefore profitability of the swine industry.
