EXPERIENCE IN THE DESIGN CONSTRUCTION OF PAVEMENTS IN THE PORT OF MELBOURNE

Over the past 30 years several container handling pavements have been developed and upgraded in the Port of Melbourne. This includes pavements for straddle carriers and large fork lifts. The paper describes the experiences in the investigation, design and construction of these pavements, including descriptions of common problems, advances that have been made in theory and practice in that time and areas where research is warranted to increased reliability in performance.
