Bioactive surface functionalization: concept and applications

Bioactive ceramics are the single material source that smartly induces biomineralization of bone mineral-like calcium phosphate, through which they integrate with bone tissue. Mechanism of the biomineralization inspires synthetic methodologies of new bioactive materials for clinical tissue repairs and replacements with enhanced physical and biological functions. This paper reviews the bioactive surface functionalization, which aims upon the surface chemistry of bioactive ceramics at surface modification for formation of bioactive structures on tough materials, sol-gel derivation of bioactive nano-hybrids, biomimetic hybridization of calcium phosphate on polymers macrotextured in 3D-structure, and bioactive matrix for tissue engineering.
