ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY MANAGEMENT GRADUATE CERTIFICATE PROGRAM AT THE UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH

This paper describes the development of an Engineering and Technology Management Graduate Certificate Program within the Department of Industrial Engineering at the University of Pittsburgh. This five-course certificate targets graduate students who are interested in furthering their education, but do not want to commit to completing a masters degree in industrial engineering. This paper describes the motivation behind the certificate program including how it complements the current Masters of Science in Industrial Engineering degree. The structure of the program is also described to include a phased-implementation of three tracks in the following areas: Quality Management, Engineering and Project Management, and Emerging Technology Management. Promotion and marketing of the program will also be discussed. This progressive certificate program provides a template for other programs wishing to undertake a similar venture and provides tips for a successful implementation.
