AN OVERVIEW OF BUREAU OF RECLAMATION PROJECTS USING ROLLER-COMPACTED CONCRETE

The Bureau of Reclamation's initial experience with the use of roller-compacted concrete (RCC) for hydraulic structures began in March 1980 with the decision to design and construct Upper Stillwater Dam, a straight gravity RCC dam and a key feature of the Central Utah Project. More than twenty years later, Reclamation has used RCC in a wide variety of ways to modify existing dams throughout the nation to address a variety of project requirements. These applications include new and/or replacement dams, dam modifications, spillway modifications, and overtopping protection. Some of these case histories are presented in chronological order and highlight design and construction considerations, as well as lessons learned which have helped to develop Reclamation's RCC design and construction philosophy. These case histories will be included in a new RCC technical guideline currently being prepared by Reclamation. The guideline will be an in-depth document limited to dams and appurtenant structures and related to RCC mix design, material properties, design details, construction methods, quality control-quality assurance (QC-QA) and testing, and temperature control.
