Fluorometric determination of aqueous humor flow rate in red-tailed hawks (Buteo jamaicensis)

A protocol was developed for fluorometric determination of aqueous humor flow rate in 6 red-tailed hawks (Buteo jamaicensis). The corneas were loaded with fluorescein by topical administration, then corneal and aqueous humor fluorescein concentrations were measured at 5, 6.5, and 8 hours later under isoflurane anesthesia. Concentrations vs time plots were generated, and slopes and cornea: aqueous humor concentration ratios from these plots were used to calculate flow rates. Calculations were performed using software provided with the fluorophotometer and by manual computation. The calculation methods were compared.
