A simplified Method for Assessing Seismic Effects on Framed Structures

In the engineering design of structures for seismic effects today, the engineers often feel helpless in dealing with a massive amount of data without much insight. Thus, there is a pressing need for an analytical methodology serving as guidance for optimal design. The present work aims at meeting such a need and offers a step-by-step approach for assessing the seismic effects on framed structures through strain energy considerations by incorporating a "frequency functional" into the equivalent static load concept. The framed structure is modeled as an assembly of several component structures which have simple fundamental frequency expressions. The frequency functional is expressed in terms of the participation factors and the square of the fundamental frequencies of the component structures. The results are obtained for two mutually exclusive and complementary categories. Several examples for references and explorations are included.
