The U.S. is working on new explosive formulations that will provide greater energetic output than LX-14. Several new formulations, based on the 1,3, 3-trinitroazetidine (TNAZ) and hexanitrohexaazaisowurtzhane (CL-20) family of explosives, have been developed. A Sense and Destroy Armor (SADARM) type EFP warhead design was selected to demonstrate the improved performance that these new MPE formulations will provide. A Finite Element model was developed using the JWLB equations of state to simulate the effects on a baseline EFP liner that was designed for LX-14. These simulations and performance increases were verified in actual warhead tests. An additional effort was conducted to optimize the EFP liner for each new MPE formulations. A design study was completed to prove that the introduction of MPEs would lead to smaller and fighter warheads with the equivalent performance of larger warheads with conventional explosives.
