This paper reports initial results from the National Physical Laboratory's 3D optical scanner assessment facility, where the affect the operator may have on the performance of articulated arm mounted 3D laser line scanners has been investigated. Two scanners from different manufacturers have been assessed. Reliable and repeatable results are produced by mounting each system on an automated, motorised, adjustable rail system, allowing for the control of scan: direction, velocity and distance to target. These results indicate that both scanners assessed perform within the manufacturers' specifications with varying scanner head velocity but, for the best results with these scanners, the scanner head should not be moved with a linear velocity greater than 16 mm·s~(-1)
