A flexure system refers to an assembly of several spatially oriented slender elastic elements that determine the mobility between two rigid bodies. Each flexure element restricts motion along a specifed direction (called constraint direction), while permitting motion in other directions. Thus, a flexure system will have a degree of freedom (DoF), which is the number of independent directions in three-dimensional space along which unrestricted motion is permitted. Determining these DoFs constitute analysis of flexure mobility. Consequently, the crux of a flexure synthesis problem is to determine the number of flexure building blocks and their spatial orientation to effect a degree of freedom (DoF) between two rigid bodies. The ability to perform quick mobility analysis accelerates the synthesis process of flexure systems.
