The multi-probe error separation method has been used in spindle research, with emphasis on estimation of spindle error motions. The multi-probe error separation method utilizes multiple sensors arranged around the circumference of a rotating artifact. The method can use an un-calibrated, but nominally round, artifact as the target; and separates the spindle motion errors from the roundness errors of the artifact. Most researchers using this method have been focused on the spindle error motions. In this work, we investigate the use of the multi-probe error separation method as a means of in-process measurement of workpiece roundness during machining and grinding operations.
