A GRATING LIGHT VALVE~(TM) BASED HIGH-PERFORMANCE DYNAMIC EQUALIZER

A diffractive MEMS structure, called the Grating Light Valve~(TM) (GLV~(TM)) device, is used as a seamless 1-dimensional variable optical attenuator (VOA) array in a high performance dynamic equalizer (DE) module. The precise attenuation of the GLV-based DE provides very low spectral ripple after equalization, which make it suitable for dynamic gain equalizers (DGE). Additionally, the GLV device has fine spectral resolution and high dynamic range that allows it to be used in channelized applications, such as dynamic channel equalizers (DCE) or re-configurable blocking filters (RBF) at optical add-drop multiplexers (OADM) nodes. This paper will discuss applications of such devices in optical networks, and experimental results showing performance characteristics of the GLV-based optical modules are presented.
