Design of the optical transport network is more challenging task in terms of marketing issues: optimality in view of network resource usage with consideration of supporting the end-to-end connections, maintainability of high reliable optical transport network, and applicability satisfying the time-to-market realization of various specifications. The optical, cross-connect system (OXC) has been considered as highly responsible in network element for the optical transport network to achieve the marketability. In this paper, we propose a software design for the OXC. For providing modularity, portability, and on-line update, we adopt the distributed object-orient UML modeling and real-time CORBA middleware that make possible the unified software design from high-level management to low-level device control with having identical interfaces. The Tera OXC system, which implements the provisioning a switching path setup based on the proposed design, shows that managed objects can be added or dropped easily to develop an intelligent OXC system and various specifications for supporting the multi-service, multi-carrier, and multi vendor optical transport network can be provided in time.
