Hepatocyte transplantation is recognized as a therapeutic option for the treatment of severe liver disease. Applications have been reported in patients with acute liver failure, in chronic liver disease and recently in a patient with inherited hyperbilirubinaemia. Hepatocytes can be transplanted either into the liver via the portal vein, the spleen or the peritoneal cavity. Hepatocytes transplanted into the liver profit from the natural hepatic microenvironment with appropriate extracellular matrix components, growth factors, nutrients and interactions with other liver cells. The cells enter the liver plates, successfully integrate into the liver parenchyma and survive and function long term.
