TiO_2 samples were synthesised by a paniculate sol-gel process using tetramethylammonium hydroxide and other bases as peptizing agents, which results in a certain amount of rodlike anatase particles exposing (100) faces. Samples were characterised by particles size and form factor distributions, and X-ray powder diffraction. For comparison reasons, TiO_2 nanoparticles were synthesised in HNO_3 particulate sols as well. Dye-sensitised solar cells based on TiO_2 layers fabricated with different TiO_2 nanoparticles and sintered at various temperatures. Additionally, the amount of 4-tert-butylpyridine added to the electrolyte was varied. Electron lifetimes and diffusion coefficients were afterwards determined by intensity modulated photovoltage and photocurrent spectroscopy (IMVS, IMPS) and by electrochemical impedance measurements (EIS).
