Haptoglobin is a protein in the porcine acute phase response induced by trauma, infection or inflammation (1). During acute inflammation, increased haptoglobin concentration in serum is observed in pigs (2,3,4). In commercial slaughter pig herds, highhaptoglobin concentration in serum has been found in pigs with clinical signs of lameness and tail bite (5). The purpose of the present study was to test the applicability of haptoglobin as non-specific objective marker of clinical signs in individual finishing pigs. Furthermore, the relation between haptoglobin serum concentration and rectal temperature was investigated.
