Between June 1997 and December 1998, a cohort study in pigs was conducted in 82 breeding and 122 fattening herds in Switzerland to obtain a health and productivity profile (1,2,3). During this study, cross-sectional surveys were conducted to establishthe prevalence of infectious agents and latent zoonoses in the pig population of Switzerland. Breeding farms were randomly selected from the client databases of 14 practitioners listed as pig specialists with the Swiss Association of Swine Medicine. Thepractitioners were selected from areas with dense pig populations. The farm owners were contacted by their herd veterinarian and consent to participate in the study was obtained.
