Exudative epidermitis in pigs is caused by Staphylococcus hyicus and occurs worldwide. In some regions the frequency of the disease increases, probably also caused by intensive housing conditions (6). The disease can have severe economic consequencesfor pig keepers. Exudative epidermitis in the generalized form mainly occurs in suckling piglets or recently weaned piglets, whereas the localized form of the disease is mainly seen in fattening pigs. Antiinfective therapy can be made ineffective due toincreasing plasmid-coded antibiotic resistances (5). Cefquinome is a fourth generation cephalosporin antibiotic and it is active against both gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria (1,4). It is registered in the EU for the treatment of bacterial respiratory disease (3) and puerperal septicemia and toxemia syndrome (2) in swine.
