CHEMEQ~(RTM) polymeric antimicrobial, active ingredientpofy (2-propenal, 2-propenoic acid), is a new antimicrobial for which a variety of uses has been proposed, including the control of porcine postweaning colibacillosis (PWC) (1,2). PWC is a commonproblem that occurs endemically in piggeries throughout the world (3). The major clinical sign is a watery diarrhoea that develops within 1 to 5 days post weaning. PWC is associated with an overgrowth of a limited range of one or more serotypes of enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli in the proximal small intestine (4). Specific E. coli pili adhere to villous enterocytes in the small intestine, where the bacteria induce secretory diarrhoea through the release of specific enterotoxins (5). Increasingly, thestrains of is. coli associated with PWC are becoming resistant to a range of antimicrobials (6). The current study was undertaken to attempt to confirm previous work in which CHEMEQR~(TM) polymeric antimicrobial was found to assist in the control of PWC(7). The efficacy of the treatment was compared with that of Apramycin. Apramycin was used regularly for the control of PWC on the farm from which the experimental pigs originated.
