INTELSAT, in the form of an intergovernmental organization (IGO), was created in 1964 to bring satellite communications to the world. Over the 37 years of its existence, the organization has been a leader in the efficient and responsible use of the geostationary orbit and associated frequency spectrum. In July 2001, following the developments in the global telecommunications environment, the organization changed its status and became a private company. The new status requires new working methods in relations with the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) and the administrations of the countries where the new company -Intelsat, Ltd. - does business. This paper explains how the intergovernmental organization was transformed into a private company and how the new company conducts its business with the ITU and other players in the area of electromagnetic compatibility. It also outlines new agreements reached in the process of privatization, as they relate to the ITU process.
