The functional-structural tree model LIGNUM presents coniferous and deciduous trees with simple structural units called tree segment, branching point and bud. The structural units of LIGNUM describe both the three dimensional architecture of a tree crown and the physiological processes in a tree. The model LIGNUM has been implemented with generic programming where the branching structure of three translates nicely to a set of embedded lists; each axis is a list of tree segments, branching points and the terminating bud and each branching point is a list of axes. To implement the functioning of a tree five generic algorithms have been defined to traverse the tree, collect data and apply metabolic operations to the structural units. We present ongoing work with LIGNUM to describe formally the dynamics of the architectural development of a tree with Lindenmayer systems, and the assessment of radiation regime with a discrete representation of the 3D growth space in which the mean characteristics of the shoots or leaves in space units is observed allowing us the functional-structural analysis of forest stands in the future.
