Until recently conventional surgical tracheostomy had a high overall morbidity and mortality rate in the ICU which was prevalently related to the underlying pathology. The mortality rate associated with the tracheostomy itself is very low, but complications such as bleeding, cellulitis-infection of the stoma and bad cosmetic results associated with the open procedure are still existing and relatively frequent. Several authors have substantiated the reduced incidence of bleeding and stomal infections with percutaneous tracheostomy (PT) in contrast with the surgical procedure [1,2].
