摘要

Managing the beaches of Jupiter Island requires the implementation of protective measures to provide stability to the shoreline. Beach nourishment has been identified as the method with which to accomplish this task. Over the past 30 years the Town has completed several beach nourishment activities. Most recently, in 1995/1996 a beach renourishment project was completed. This project included the placement of 1.74 million cubic yards of sand over a five-mile length and increased the beach width by an average of 115 feet. Woods Hole Group, Inc. Was contracted to complete an evaluation of the project's performance. This evaluation builds upon our extensive experience working for the Town and knowledge of the coastal processes along the shoreline. This work had two primary objectives: 1. Compare the performance of the 1995-1996 beach renourishment project to project expectations that were developed through numerical modeling; and, 2. Provide recommendations to optimize future renourishment projects on a large-scale, as well as on a smaller scale basis in the vicinity of erosional hotspots. This report has significant value to the Town. First, the findings provide an improved knowledge of the erosion processes that can be used to optimize future projects, improving project performance and saving cost. Second, recognizing that there has been a significant changeover in the resident population, it will likely be valuable to have a report of this nature to document the performance of the beach renourishment project. This report provides assurance that beach nourishment has a meaningful long-term benefit to the community. The following paper has been prepared to document the performance of the 1995/1996 beach renourishment project.
