The corrosion protection of thin films of intrinsically conducting polymers (ICP) is studied with polymethylthiophene (PMT) electrochemically deposited on mild steel. Homogeneous and very adherent PMT films can be prepared on mild steel if the surface is pretreated with 2(3-thienyl)ethylphosphono acid as adhesion promoter. The corrosion protective properties of PMT are investigated with topcoats using a new experimental set-up where the reaction on the mild steel surface and the reaction in the PMT film could be studied separately. It is shown that there is no catalytic action of PMT for the oxygen reduction and for metal passivation, a mechanism often discussed in the literature.
