METHODICS FOR TESTING OF MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF CERAMIC MATERIALS

This article deals with testing of the mechanical properties of biomaterials according to ISO standards. Testing system MTS 858 MINI BIONIX, that is suitable to executing of various tests for finding out mechanical properties of combinations of biomaterials, is placed in "Laboratory of Biomechanics of Man" at the CTU in Prague. The testing system is available for accurate testing under axial load up to ±25 kN with standard displacements of ±50 mm and simultaneously under torsional moments between ±100 N.m and total rotation of 270°. By adding a low-force transducer is able to run monotonic and fatigue tests in the milli-newton range. There is the extensometer, as accessory, for measuring elongation micro-meter range at the laboratory. The special jigs for fixing materials during testing were developed in the collaboration with NORTON DIAS, Ltd. in Turnov and CBMI of CTU in Prague. First experiments were performed with the various combinations of the ceramics and the result shows that the MTS system possibilities are fully sufficient for executing these tests. International Standard specifies the characteristic of, and corresponding test method for, a biocompatible and biostable ceramic bone-substitute material for use as material for surgical implants.
