In coatings industry, nanometric particles are usually utilized as additives, and are able to improve some performance of coatings. A new coating using alkyd as matrix and nanometric particles as pigment is introduced in this paper. Different experiments indicated that by adding nanometric titanium dioxide, coatings became hard, tight and wear resistant, all of which were shown in a series of mechanical property tests. More experiments focusing on severe conditions, petrol, acid and alkali resistance and heat resistance tests were performed. electrochemical impendence spectrum (EIS) was used to investigate the corrosion resistance. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) was used to observe how the nanometric particles are located at matrix. It was proved that nanometric titanium dioxide as the filler significantly contributed to improve the mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of alkyd paint.
