The consequences of erosion-corrosion are severe with economic penalties resulting from premature failure of components, increased downtime and increased maintenance costs. The use of carbon steel in conjunction with CO2 corrosion inhibitor under two-phase flow (liquid/sand) and high shear stress conditions, successful application of inhibitor can be difficult. Under such conditions, the total material damage is identified as being associated with electrochemical corrosion, solid particle erosion and synergistic effects between the two. To investigate the possibility of using corrosion inhibitors to reduce erosion-corrosion, this study has characterized the corrosion, and erosion-corrosion phenomena. DC polarization, AC impedance, gravimetric measurements and surface analysis methods were used to provide mechanistic information of the erosion-corrosion damage in the absence and presence of a commercial corrosion inhibitor. In this paper the potential for applying corrosion inhibitor for the reduction of material loss in erosion–corrosion is assessed and the role of the inhibitor in reducing corrosion, erosion and interactive mass loss mechanisms are discussed.
