The effects of applied potential and sensitization on the stress corrosion cracking (SCC) of nitrogen-containing stainless steel (SS) 316LN in high temperature water doped with chloride at 250°C were studied using slow strain rate testing (SSRT). The results are compared with previously published data for 316 SS without nitrogen and 304NG SS with nitrogen. The susceptibility to SCC of 316LN SS was less than that of 316 SS and 304NG SS. Sensitization showed little effect on the SCC of 316LN SS and considerable effect on the SCC of 316 SS and 304NG.SS. The predominant cracking mode for annealed and sensitized 316LN SS was transgranular.
