Lightwave communication systems are evolving to more complex architectures, requiring novel components to support new networking features. First-generation dynamic spectral equalizers (DSE) have been deployed to flatten the gain profile of optical amplifiers. These early DSE exhibited low spectral resolution, as they were designed to match the slow variation of the gain profile. Today's optical networks require optical add-drop capability as well as broadcast-and-select topologies. Such capabilities are enabled with high-resolution, channelized DSE, which can attenuate each optical channel independently to an extinction exceeding 30dB in a DWDM system.
