Monolithically integrated 40 Gb/s transceivers will improve performance and reduce costs. We have demonstrated monolithically integrated photoreceivers with 40 GHz bandwidth and > 0.5 A/W responsivity. We have also demonstrated other 40 Gb/s components such as modulator drivers with 50 GHz bandwidth and digital circuits with 45 GHz bandwidth. We have also demonstrated components of the physical layer circuitry that support 50 Gb/s data rates. We outline here the current status of 40 Gb/s component performance and integration, and the path towards realizing a single chip transceiver using monolithic integration.
