Monitoring Local Crustal Deformations Using High Precision GPS Network

The Finnish Geodetic Institute established high precision GPS network at Olkiluoto in 1994. The purpose of the work is to study possible local deformations at the investigation area, which was selected as a candidate for disposal of spent nuclear fuel. The GPS network has been observed twice a year since 1995. We have found out that only a few change rates are about 0.5±0.1-0.2 mm/yr, but generally the network is quite stable. We established a baseline for electronic distance measurements (EDM) in 2002 because of the scaling problems of the GPS observations. More observation campaigns are needed to determine the possible local crustal deformations. We will continue the GPS and EDM measurements semiannually at Olkiluoto.
