Finite element computational modeling of magneto-optic imaging

Magneto-Optic imaging (MOI) implements a magneto-optic sensor to produce an image of magnetic flux leakage from surface and subsurface defects in ferromagnetic and non-ferromagnetic metals. The techniques have gained widespread interest in the aviation industry for detecting cracks and corrosion beneath paint and other surface coatings. This paper presents finite element (FE) modeling of magneto-optic imaging. Transient finite element implementation techniques are presented for a typical aircraft inspection configuration. The implementation is done for different materials, and results revealed a noticeable change in the vertical component of the magnetic filed. FE presents a powerful tool for enhancing use of MOI technique.
