摘要

The cortical dynamics underlying perception of speech sounds are still largely unknown. Here we used magnetoencephalography (MEG) and semi-synthetic speech generation (SSG) to study the cortical processing of three Finnish sustained vowels /a/, /o/ and /u/, in a passive (unattended) condition. The analysis of the auditory N1m responses revealed that the three vowels evoked equally strong activation at around 120ms. In the left hemisphere, differences in ECD locations for the vowels were observed while the ECD locations in the right hemisphere were the same. The left-hemispheric ECD distribution reflected the acoustic similarity and dissimilarity of the vowels, with the ECDs for vowels having similar acoustic structure in terms of their F1 and F2 values located close to each other in the auditory cortex.
