This paper summarizes the system level work that has been performed and is ongoing, in the area of potential NATO/Military applications of wireless LAN (WLAN) technologies and some related mobile IP roaming implementations. An important issue is the dichotomy between the commercial needs of ever increasing capacities in relatively benign propagation environments and the requirements of military/crises response operations in difficult propagation environments such as wet/ iced forests, rough/mountainous terrain, etc. From the security aspect, a brief description of the new AES Rijndael encryption scheme is given. This recent development is, potentially able to offer interoperability with high levels of security for COTS products, including WLANs, for the first time.
