EMPIRICAL SCALING OF RESPONSE SPECTRA FOR THE TERRITORY OF NORTH-WESTERN BALKAN

Presented in this paper are the most important results obtained from the investigations performed for determination of empirical scaling of response spectra for horizontal and vertical components of earthquake ground motion in the territory of north-western Balkan or former Yugoslavia. In addition to the earthquake parameters, magnitude and distance, the regression model for prediction of the values of spectral amplitudes includes also the parameter of the effect of local soil conditions. The comparison between the shapes and the amplitudes of the predicted spectra in former Yugoslavia and the predictions of some recent attenuation relationships for Europe and United States shows that it is not feasible to use directly the empirical scaling models developed for one region for estimation of spectral amplitude in other region. Also, the comparative analyses made between the spectral shapes derived from these investigations and the spectra proposed in Eurocode 8 point to considerable differences in the values of spectral amplitudes for the same periods and lead to the conclusion that the spectra proposed in Eurocode 8 yield lower values of seismic forces than those spectra evaluated based on the recorded data in the territory of the north-western Balkan.
