Various novel carboxylate esters containing one or more sulfhydryl (SH) moieties have been found to be remarkably effective as thermal stabilizers for poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC). These nonmetallic compounds also are excellent PVC plasticizers. Thus they can serve as replacements for both the primary heat stabilizers and the plasticizers that are now being used in PVC products. The preparation and properties of some of these new additives are described.
