This paper gives an insight in the evolution of deep water lifting capabilities on the J-class installation vessels of Jumbo. Two existing methods that are used for recently executed deepwater installation projects are described together with the pro's and cons of each system. Based on this comparison, a new concept for installation of heavy structures in ultra deep water is introduced. In order to check the feasibility of this new concept, an in-house analysis campaign has been executed. The first results and discussion of these results are presented at the end of this paper.
