The ARBRE Biomass IGCC Plant Experience and Future Potential

This paper discusses both the progress and results achieved in the current ARable Biomass Renewable Energy (ARBRE) biomass project and how the lessons learned and the technology developed can be applied to larger, more efficient future schemes. The ARBRE project is located at Eggborough, near York, in the United Kingdom. ARBRE has been developed by First Renewables of the UK and TPS Termiska Processor AB of Sweden. The project is a commercial demonstration of a 10MWe Biomass Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (BIGCC) power plant using TPS atmospheric gasification technology and a 4.8MWe industrial gas turbine supplied by ALSTOM Power UK Ltd. The project has a long term power purchase contract in the UK's Non Fossil Fuel Obligation electricity programme and will provide electricity for the domestic needs of 33 500 people. The electricity is sold into the local grid.
