Community noise near airports has been a major aviation noise concern, prompting therndevelopment of aircraft noise and performance models to predict the noise impact due tornchanges in fleet mix and operations. Once aircraft leave the terminal area and reach highrnaltitudes (above 3,048 m (10,000 ft)), the aircraft noise received on the ground is assumed tornbe insignificant relative to ambient noise levels. However, this might not be the case whenrnan aircraft is powered by an advanced propulsion system that produces higher noise levelsrnthan conventional jets and propeller-drive aircraft, and particularly when those aircraft flyrnover areas with very low ambient noise levels, such as in wilderness areas. Over the pastrntwo decades, some limited noise modeling capabilities and related research have begun tornquantify the high altitude aircraft noise, or “en route” noise. The purpose of this paper isrnto review and summarize related noise prediction research, and discuss key requirementsrnand considerations in developing this new capability.
