In this paper a new kind of multi-coordinate drive with coupled magnetic circuits for the thrust force generation in x- and y-direction is presented. The optimization of the geometry of the flat motor with the Finite Element-Method (FEM) is carried out. Due to the complex three-dimensional flux paths it is not possible to laminate the magnetic components, therefore a soft magnetic composite is used to reduce the eddy current losses. The second part of the paper deals with the construction of the flat motor prototype. Finally first measurements at the prototype are compared with the calculated thrust forces.
